Even Artists Wear Shoes. by start-static Even Artists Wear Shoes. by start-static
UPDATE: If you're in Australia and you want a pair, check out my journal here: [link] for more info.

---

Alas, we are not exempt from this aspect of society and thus, extra precautions must be undertaken to ensure footwear meets our creative standards.

These shoes cost me $6 from Kmart and were plain white canvas hi-top takeoffs. I couldn't resist a blank canvas (as many of my fellow artists will appreciate) so I decided that they should become my new shoes.

Hence, 6 hours and a crap load of acrylic paint later - the shoesies are born.

The graffiti-style inners of each shoe say "Start / Today" when placed side by side (or worn whilst standing duck-footed) which was a tribute to my spontanaeity and regular impulsive behaviour.

The outers feature two characters, the one that looks like a chef's hat is featured in my other acrylic piece 'Acid Rain', and the teddy bear is a recent original from a comic I created for a friend's birthday.

As a funny note, I wore these on a school excursion to Sydney and have 8 people offer to buy them off me - with offers from $20 - $120... That was kinda cool considering they cost me $6 to make haha.

Anywho, enjoy them in all their glory.

Specs:
Time: around 6 hours (i was using the smallest painbrush available for the entireity of the shoe)
Materials: Canvas shoes, acrylic paint, an extremely fine paintbrush and scotchguard (for waterproofing afterwards)

Sorry this response is coming so late. I only just got back from africa (I left on the 29th of Nov. and you commented me on Dec. 2nd) so big love and apologies for that!

The brand of acrylic I use is Chromacryl and I purchase the lovely stuff from the newsagent (it's pretty much sold at every aussie newsagent I've ever been in) so I'm sure you will be able to get it wherever in Australia it is that you live.

:D

Hope that helps! Any other questionseses?

Dose it have to be acrylic paint or could you just use any paint?

Acrylic is best, in my experience.
Acrylic paint or fabric paint.
Acrylic is the most common anyway, so it shouldn't be hard to come across.

As long as you dont use a really water based paint like water colour or poster paint that wont hold.

Of course I don't have a problem with it!

I've been painting, drawing and doing art for as long as I can remember, so the design itself was not at all difficult. I penciled a rough idea on and then just free-handed the rest.

The main problem for me is that these were so time-consuming becaus eI put a lot of effort into making them look really professional.

Basically for me, I used the tiniest brush I could find and spent about three hours per shoe painting (they will use a lot of paint too becasue of the surface area of canvas being higher due to the thousands of little dimples on it's surface).

And when you say "like mine" what do you mean exactly? The idea of painting shoes is hardly original on my part, so I wouldn't be concerned about that.
As for using my designs, you're welcome to base it off something you've seen in my gallery, and give it your own flair if you're stuck for ideas?

I am a female. But, I am gay. So you know... it probably could work if you decided to convert to the dark side? haha

Your comment made me laugh so much.
Any normal person would've just written "i want to marry you and your shoes" but no, you had to go all over-thinking on me haha.

:lmao:

Take care!

Haha perhaps one day when I work out the merriment that is paypal, I will expand into the international front lol.

And please do it! It's so much fun!
I'm about to make another pair in the near future, because I've worn this pair so much that the soles have almost worn completely through (the downside of cheap ass $6 shoes) haha.

If you ever have any questions/need any advice in painting them, give me a buzz, mmkay?

(And thank you for the fave!!)

Ah! So I found these old shoe of mine that i haven't worn in a while because they were worn out. @.@ Well almost. >>'' But yeah, I started on them [unfortuantely ther aren't canvas shoes. ><;; just some old Shaqs =P ] and the question came up. Did you paint the shoe one solid color on each side, and then paint OVER that?

No, I just painted my design. I only undercoat with white if the colours don't come up strong enough over the original colour! :D

Good luck! Make sure you show me the end product!

If they are painted with decent acrylic, then yes, it should make them somewhat "splash proof" (but only really if it's canvas - leather/vinyl shoes always tend to show much more wear and deteriorate heaps more!!)
